Idioms

English, like every language, has its own idioms: words, phrases, or expressions that cannot be taken literally. In other words, when used in everyday language, they have a meaning other than the basic one you would find in the dictionary. Learning them makes understanding and using a language a lot easier and more fun!

For example, “break a leg” is a common idiom.

Literal meaning:  If you break your leg you should go to the doctor to get it fixed.

Idiomatic meaning:  Do your best and do well.  Often, actors tell each other to “break a leg” before they go out on stage to perform.

Here's another one

I was living pretty hand to mouth in those days   (verb) to satisfy one’s basic needs because of a lack of money  (viver precariamente)

More Sentences:

The University students are living from hand to mouth because they don’t have a lot of money from their part-time jobs.

Jana lived from hand to mouth while studying for her Masters.

While Rebecca is unemployed she will live from hand to mouth, so she decided to cancel her vacation.

Hand To Mouth

George Michael

Jimmy got nothing made himself a name
With a gun that he polished for a rainy day
A smile and a quote from a vigilante move
Our boy Jimmy just blew them all away
He said it made him crazy
Twenty five years living
Hand to mouth
Hand to mouth
Hand to mouth
Hand to mouth
Sweet little baby on a big white doorstep
She needs her mother but her mother is dead
Just another hooker that the lucky can forget
Just another hooker
It happens everyday
She loved her little baby
But she couldn't bear to see her living
Hand to mouth
I believe in the gods of America
I believe in the land of the free
But no one told me
No one told me
That the gods believe in nothing
So with empty hands I pray
And from day to hopeless day
They still don't see me
See me
Everybody talks about the new generation
Jump on the wagon or they'll leave you behind
But no one gave a thought to the rest of the nation
Like to help you buddy but I haven't got the time
Somebody shouted save me
But everybody started living
Hand to mouth
There's a big white lady
On a big white doorstep
She asked her daddy and her daddy said yes
Has to give a little for the dollars that we get
Has to give a little they say its for the best
Somebody shouted maybe
But they kept on living
Hand to mouth
So she ran to the arms of America
And she kissed the powers that be
And someone told me
Someone told me
That the gods believe in nothing
So with empty hands I pray
And I tell myself one day
They just might see me

Maybe you've already heard another George Michael's sucess.

Careless Whisper

George Michael

I feel so unsure
As I take your hand and lead you to the dance floor
As the music dies, something in your eyes
Calls to mind a silver screen
And all those sad goodbyes

I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it's easy to pretend
I know you're not a fool

Should've known better than to cheat a friend
And waste the chance that I've been given
So I'm never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you

Time can never mend
The careless whispers of a good friend
To the heart and mind
Ignorance is kind
There's no comfort in the truth
Pain is all you'll find

I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it's easy to pretend
I know you're not a fool

Should've known better than to cheat a friend
And waste this chance that I've been given
So I'm never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you

Never without your love
Tonight the music seems so loud
I wish that we could lose this crowd
Maybe it's better this way
We'd hurt each other with the things we'd want to say

We could have been so good together
We could have lived this dance forever
But now who's gonna dance with me?
Please stay

And I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it's easy to pretend
I know you're not a fool

Should've known better than to cheat a friend
And waste the chance that I've been given
So I'm never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you

(Now that you're gone) Now that you're gone
(Now that you're gone) What I did's so wrong
That you had to leave me alone?
